Winter Conditioning

Just keep rowing...just keep rowing...

After a successful Fall season, Winter conditioning is available to ensure our rowers stay in shape and ready for the competitive Spring season - just around the corner. Strength training and conditioning is important in the sport of rowing as when you row, you use all of your muscles, especially your core and if your core gets weak, it will be more difficult for you to be ready for the weekly regattas coming up. Our athletes will learn about the body and how best to use it to move their boat through the water.

Winter brings us to James Madison High School, training on the erg machines and in the fitness center. Cardio is stressed as well as timing on the ergs. Our goal is that you not only race others, but you are encouraged to strive to beat your own times the stronger you get. It’s also a lot of fun and keeps you in touch with your crew friends.

Crew as a Secondary Sport

In addition to rowers in Winter Conditioning, crew invites students in other sports to participate with us (Spring too if they can!). The act of rowing is arguably one of the best workouts for your body and benefits athletes in every sport. If you know of someone who plays tennis in the Fall, they are welcomed to join crew for Winter conditioning.

Spring Season

This is where the rubber meets the road!

As challenging as being indoors all winter can be, the absolute elation of being back on the Occoquan in late February or early March (weather permitting) cannot be put into words. All the hours on the erg give way to the freedom of the water. Along with that freedom comes a rigorous training and regatta schedule that does not let up.

Student-Athlete Expectations

  • Crew is a TEAM SPORT, and it is expected rowers attend all water practices and scheduled regattas (Including Spring Break Training) - The members of your boat are counting on you!
  • Be supportive of the team and of yourself by accepting coaching decisions and realize team goals come before the needs or desires of any individual.
  • Enjoy being a member of a great sport at Madison High School

Key Takeaways

  • Crew is a time intensive sport, and its important student-athletes are aware and plan their time and scholarly demands wisely.
  • Stotesbury and National Regattas (qualifying boats only) require the athletes to travel to the venue on Thursday and most races occur on Friday during the day.

*Transportation to the river is included in the membership dues for the Spring Season (M-F only). Transportation is not provided for Saturday practice or home regattas. We encourage participants to carpool if possible.  Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools.

2025 Warhawk Crew Summer Camp Registration

Coming in March 2025

Summer Camp

Warhawk Crew is like family. Since we are together so much, we just can’t bear to stop training just because it’s summer. We continue to work on ourselves while offering an opportunity for newcomers to try out the sport and get out on the water.

The Summer Camp program activity is tailored for Middle Schoolers who wish to row within their next year or two at James Madison High School (Rising 8th and 9th graders). We spend one week in a structured rowing clinic at our Sandy Run practice area, with our JV and Varsity rowers helping out when they aren’t training. It's a great opportunity to see why we love this sport.

**For Summer Camp,  we meet at JMHS and transportation to/from the River is included.

Fall Learn 2 Row (L2R) & Green Days

Learn to Row Days and Green Days are both related to rowing, but they serve different purposes:

Learn to Row Days:

  • Purpose: These special days are designed for absolute beginners (although experienced rowers are welcome to support) —people who’ve always wondered what rowing is all about. If you’ve never dipped an oar in water (or even if you’ve just dipped your toe), Learn to Row Days are for you.
  • What Happens: You’ll get hands-on experience. Maybe you’ll hop on a rowing machine (affectionately known as an “erg”) and simulate rowing strokes on land. Or perhaps you’ll venture onto the water in a stable training boat, guided by experienced coaches.
  • Goal: By the end of Learn to Row Days, you’ll have a basic understanding of rowing technique, boat handling, and maybe even a newfound appreciation for blisters (they’re like rowing badges, really).

Green Days:

  • Purpose: Green Days are for rowers who’ve already dipped their oars in the water or have some prior on-the-water experience.
  • Focus: These days aim to increase technical proficiency. You’ll work on fundamental rowing techniques.
  • Who’s It For? If you’re not quite ready for the intensity of a fall racing team (or if your schedule doesn’t allow it), or maybe you're new and want a little more experience before committing, Green Days are your sweet spot.

So, whether you’re a newbie dipping your toes or a seasoned rower seeking refinement, there’s a day for you by the water. Just remember blisters heal, boats float, and rowing camaraderie is as strong as an oarlock bolt.

The Fall Learn to Row program is offered to students of all grades at Madison at no cost, although there is a small fee for new rowers to register with USRowing for the required current season liability waiver (see Step 5 in registration steps).

**Please note that for fall rowing, transportation to and from the Quan is not provided.  We encourage participants to carpool if possible.  Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools.
