2022 Fall Learn to Row

2022 Fall Learn to Row

Are you a returning Warhawk Crew athlete and miss the Occoquan, or are you new to the sport and interested in giving rowing a try?  Then join us for Fall Learn to Row at our Sandy Run facility on the Occoquan River.

The Fall Learn to Row Days are open to all rowers, returning rowers will have an opportunity to get back on the river and get back to basics before we head to the hallways for Winter Conditioning.   You'll also work with novices to help our team grow and thrive.

For our Novice Rowers and Freshman, Fall Learn to Row Days are designed to introduce new rowers to the sport, from the proper way to hold an oar to porting a shell to actually going out and getting fast in a boat.  Combined outings on the water ensure that freshman and novices get a feel for the water and get to experience being part of our team. Attending even a couple of sessions will be helpful for novices to understand the basics of Crew.  No prior rowing experience is necessary.

Fall rowing sessions are open to EVERYONE and will mix freshman and novices with returning varsity athletes.  The Fall Learn to Row program is offered to students of all grades at Madison at no cost, although there is a small fee for new rowers to register with USRowing for the required current season liability waiver.

Participation in fall rowing is OPTIONAL for new and returning rowers.  Participation is not required to have a great career as a new rower later in the season.

**Please note that for fall rowing, transportation to and from the river is not provided.  We encourage participants to carpool if possible, and you can sign up to be included on a carpool map when you register.  Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools

NEW ROWERS:  Complete a Swim Test:

Sign Up here for the swim test on Sunday, September 25.

A swim test is required for all new rowers to participate in Learn-to-Row, or to join Crew in the spring.  We will be conducting a swim test on Sunday, September 25 from 12-1:30 p.m. at Machine Performance Center and once in the Spring. You do need to sign up in advance, and any questions can be directed to membership@warhawkcrew.com.

You can independently arrange a swim test with a certified lifeguard by calling your local pool or YMCA to schedule.  There may be a charge for oversight of the test, depending on the facility.  Upon completion, please have the lifeguard sign off on Warhawk Crew's Swim Test Certificate and then email to registrar@warhawkcrew.org, or drop it in our Activities Office mailbox.

If you cannot find a lifeguard who will certify your test, please send an email to: membership@warhawkcrew.com
