For our Novice Rowers and Freshman, Fall Learn to Row Days are designed to introduce new rowers to the sport, from the proper way to hold an oar to porting a shell to actually going out and getting fast in a boat. Combined outings on the water ensure that freshman and novices get a feel for the water and get to experience being part of our team. Attending even a couple of sessions will be helpful for novices to understand the basics of Crew. No prior rowing experience is necessary.
Fall rowing sessions are open to EVERYONE and will mix freshman and novices with returning varsity athletes. The Fall Learn to Row program is offered to students of all grades at Madison at no cost, although there is a small fee for new rowers to register with USRowing for the required current season liability waiver.
Participation in fall rowing is OPTIONAL for new and returning rowers. Participation is not required to have a great career as a new rower later in the season.
**Please note that for fall rowing, transportation to and from the river is not provided. We encourage participants to carpool if possible, and you can sign up to be included on a carpool map when you register. Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools
ALL PARTICIPANTS (New & Returning) MUST REGISTER FOR FALL LEARN TO ROW AND ALL FORMS TURNED IN BEFORE HEADING TO THE RIVER ON YOUR FIRST DAY!
*If you already have a VHSL physical on file for the current school year for another sport or activity, you do not need to file a second copy.
Until this form is submitted AND posted by the Activities Office, your rower will not be able to participate in Green Days.
All students must register with JMHS to participate in the crew. Click HERE to register. This is the new platform for completing Concussion ed., emergency Care info, weight room and driver / rider forms. NEW ROWERS: Complete the current year USRowing Waiver. RETURNING ROWERS do not need to complete a new USRowing waiver until registration for Crew, or until your prior membership expires.
Go to the USRowing Membership Portal and select "Individuals/Join."
Enter club name: "James Madison Crew Booster Organization" and club code: "PHS9S"
Enroll in Basic Membership (fee = $9.75) and sign the waiver for the current year. You do not need to send Warhawk Crew a certificate for this step — confirmation will be sent directly to us by USRowing.
NEW ROWERS: Complete a Swim Test:
Sign Up here for the swim test on Sunday, September 25.
A swim test is required for all new rowers to participate in Learn-to-Row, or to join Crew in the spring. We will be conducting a swim test on Sunday, September 25 from 12-1:30 p.m. at Machine Performance Center and once in the Spring. You do need to sign up in advance, and any questions can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can independently arrange a swim test with a certified lifeguard by calling your local pool or YMCA to schedule. There may be a charge for oversight of the test, depending on the facility. Upon completion, please have the lifeguard sign off on Warhawk Crew's Swim Test Certificate and then email to email@example.com, or drop it in our Activities Office mailbox.
If you cannot find a lifeguard who will certify your test, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org
