SUCCESS: OPERATION MULCH-- WOW!

To all who participated--rowers and parents, outstanding team work. Not only your strength but cooperation made the 4,200 bags get delivered ahead of schedule. We owe special thanks to Becky and Dave Rutkiewic, our JMCBO fundraising chairs who once again took the lead on mulch. Thanks also to Lori and Greg Largen, Alison Fraser and Alison Dyer.  Sue Colwell and her hospitality volunteers  provided great snacks, pizza and drinks. Thanks to past JMCBO presidents': Bob Smith and Glen Burger who gave up their day to help as well.   Kudos to the small fleet with their pick-up trucks, vans and cars, and their loaders, who really set delivery records and chopping down that mountain of mulch. Please visit the photo gallery to see some photos of this huge Mulch 08 undertaking.  PS We hope Ben Gay, ibuprofen, or similar worked on those sore muscles!

Who can spot a JMCBO past president who is back to be "one with mulch"? PS We filled his driveway last year with same!

Wash/Wax Day Sat, 3/22 11am – 4pm Sandy Run
All crew team members, 6 parent volunteers , coaches

Immediately following practice on 3/22, we will be washing and waxing our boats. As the boats come in from the water from practice, we will:

- Put them in slings- Dry them off- Wash- Apply wax- Put them away on their storage rack

contact Steve Howard if you can be a parent volunteer:  sph2sail@verizon.net

Newsletter 2/29/08 Leaping Crew News!

Tomorrow--Saturday March 1st is the first Saturday practice at Sandy Run. It will go from 8-11 a.m. same time very week until regattas start, unless coaches tell you otherwise. Please be on time, or you may not get out on the water. Transportation is on your own, but we recommend car pooling for all the right reasons. If your rower needs a ride, it is up to you to arrange that.  Remember that the latest roster is in the members only section on the website with updated phone numbers.

Important travel advisory. When traveling to Sandy Run please observe THE SPEED LIMIT.  This is particularly true as you approach and enter the park where the speed limit is 15 MPH and rangers routinely use radar. NCASRA will penalize both rowers and the team as a whole, for rowers or parents exceeding the speed limit. The penalty runs from not being able to compete in a regatta, to no practice for that rower for several weeks and ramps up to not rowing for the balance of the season.  after turning of route 123, the speed limit drops from 30 to 25 to 15. They will have police cars posted on regatta days at one or more corners and residents will also report speeding.

Paperwork and dues.   All paperwork and dues should be squared away. If you were to drop off medical forms at school or, any of the other forms to Judy Kachman or, get in a last dues payment to Judy Boot's house and have not, you must call, or email. If not, you will not be allowed to practice next week.

Volunteer Positions.   Please check the website under membership only column and click on volunteer to see the assignments. There also few more work days at Sandy Run to fulfill, that will be posted, so check back.  If you have not volunteered for a committee, please do so before a position is assigned to you.  It is critical that you get involved and not just sit on the sidelines.

Coaches’ Council.   The coaches’ council was formed to help with issues relating to practice, boat assignments and personal issues that need immediate attention. Coaches need to focus on what they have been hired to do and that is spending their time training our rowers.  The Coaches Council is the interface between parents and coaches. If you have questions or concerns, please address them directly with these Reps.  This year's coaches council are: Charlie Church, Teresa Sutton, Rusty Houston and Carol Topp. Their email addresses are posted on the website.

Mentors. Novice families please remember that your mentors are here to help you navigate all things crew ("what should I wear", do I bring food, etc., etc), so don't hesitate to contact them first if they have not called you yet. If you have a genuine concern on practice, or situations that you feel needs to be heard by the coaches council, then contact any of the council members and they will take it from there. However, your mentor families have all been around for awhile and may be able to answer your information type questions.

Spring Practice. Spring break is around the corner form 17-21 March. The practice schedule for Sandy Run is posted in the calendar.  Varsity will practice from 10:00 to 12:30.  Novices will practice from 3:30 to 5:30.  Spring Break practice is critical to seat placement and setting boats for the season.   If you have plans in place and will not be there - do not wait until the last minute to notify coaches -- you need to communicate now. We expect all rowers and coxswain to be there.   Again car pooling is recommended.

Bus Notes.   The bus is FULL but a suggestion that is extremely helpful to make some room is:  1) leave book bags in your locker or if you know a rower who has a car in the school parking lot, ask to place your book bags in their car.  If you need to take some study materials for the bus ride, fit them in your sport's bag.

Remember, DO NOT LEAVE trash on the floor of the bus or food and drink will be prohibited for the season.

We are very excited about the season, your participation and Thank you for your support.

Again any questions—don't hesitate to contact us.

Water Practice Saturday practice 8-11 a.m. Weekday practices: Bus departs 2:45 outside main gym SHARP. Returns back to school approx. 6:30 Rowers please have adequate clothing for cold or wet conditions and remember to bring WATER. Having a towel in your bag helpful also. Email's will go out no later than 1 p.m. if water practice is diverted either to the school for training or cancelled due to weather, etc.

2008 Mulch Order Forms-- Can be Downloaded-- log in first, go to members only and click "fundraising". You can make your entire fundraising committment with mulch sales--everyone needs it. Sell, sell, sell from now until March 14th--this is the fast route to take care of your fundraising obligation. You earn $2 a bag sold. Any questions contact Becky and Dave: Daverutki@aol.com

 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

New additions to the photo gallery. Check out "the power" being turned on after the holiday break for winter training. On January 3rd, Coach Goddard put together a workout that was to see how many meters the rowers could row as possible, girls vs. guys. The girls had a 5,000 meter handicap. Full power, 20-28 spm for 2 minute intervals(45 minutes total time). The boys rowed approx. 62,000m and the girls 55,000m. Not bad! The next 7 weeks are critical before the on-the-water training begins. Everyone is encouraged to come to practice as much as possible to get in the best possible shape.

Still need coxes--be on the lookout!! Rowing is great but without the cox, the boat doesn't compete, period.

JANUARY 15TH IS THE FINAL DATE FOR THE SECOND DUES INSTALLMENT.  The amount due is $300. Please mail your check to Judy Boott with rowers name noted. Her address is: 2617 Oakledge Ct. Vienna, Va. 22181 DO NOT send a check to school. Mail or drop off.

Congratulations to the Fernandez family--yes one of our own!! They won the 42" TV in the Raffle. Now they have to invite us over.

Rowers who sold the most tickets to win the top prizes: Samantha Lee sold 122 tickets.  Matthew Pepper sold 249 tickets Great Job to them and to all who made this the #1 fundraiser ever for Madison Crew.

UNIFORM AND CREW JACKETS ORDERS MUST BE PLACED BY DECEMBER 21st .Go to Crew Gear to find  information and order form.

Letter Writing Package. Information on letterwriting can be found on this website. Log in, go to Members Only, Select Fundraising and proceed to letterwriting. This is a great time of year to ask friends and relatives to support your rowing efforts and remember their donations are tax deductible. PLEASE GET THEM IN NOW!

Fundraising:  Becky Lewis  rebelewis61@aol.com   (703) 242-9063.

------------

Thank you to all contributors-- especially to our anonomous donor who matched contributions that enabled us to reach our goal to purchase: MIRAGE--a 2007 model: V1 Vespoli DM 4+  which is now at Sandy Run.

Winter Training
Winter training: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thu  each week. 3-4:30/5 p.m. outside the main gym

This is not mandatory (and those who are involved in a winter sport are not required to attend), however we do strongly encourage everyone else to do so in order to get into shape and have an opportunity for a position in a competitive boat.

Novice Boats Rock the Occ!

Despite weather better suited for March than May and tough competition from around the DC Metro area, our novices showed their mettle and girls' 4 even took home medal. Click here for photos.

Our Novice Men's 8 rowed in the hardest heat in their class, beating both TC Williams and TJ, but unfortunately not BCC or last minute change Woodson. They looked great and should be proud of their effort.

Phx NW4 Coach and Crew.JPGOur Novice Women's 4, looked great in their heat, coming in second and advancing to the final. In the final they looked very strong coming in third after West Springfield and Mount Vernon. They proudly accepted their third place medals cheered on by damp but enthusiastic family and fellow rowers.

Thanks to all the rowers on the Men's and Women's upper boats for coming down to cheer and thanks to all our family and friends for braving the cold to cheer on our terrific novices. This fine showing proves there's great things ahead for Warhawk Crew in the years to come.
